Be it a gentle piano interlude or a glorious orchestral fanfare, no element of filmcraft sets a movie’s tone and identity quite like the musical score. Film music has the power to underline a filmmaker’s narrative ideas, forge our bond to a heroic character, and move us to the point of tears. Join us all year long as we showcase cinema’s iconic composers whose musical talents enrich the images we see on screen and have us humming their unforgettable melodies as we exit the auditorium. The series continues with one of the best films in the Star Wars Franchise RETURN OF THE JEDI! See it at 7pm on July 16th or catch a special Sunday matinee on July 20th at 1pm! 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲: Experience the epic conclusion of the original trilogy in STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI. After a daring mission to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebels dispatch to Endor to destroy the second Death Star. Meanwhile, Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side without falling into the Emperor's trap.
Our screening of STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI is the 1997 Special Edition version of the film.
𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲: Just as writer/director George Lucas intended the STAR WARS trilogy as a pastiche of his greatest cultural influences, composer John Williams took inspiration from classical film giants like Holst, Wagner, and Dvorak to bring grandeur to this fantastical space opera. For this third installment, Williams carries the many familiar melodies of the previous two films, lending a vital coherence of vision. Williams introduces some new leitmotifs in RETURN OF THE JEDI as well, like the playful March of the Ewoks, a sinister theme for the wicked Emperor, and a solemn melody signifying a surprising connection between Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Williams would continue writing music for the following six STAR WARS movies, cementing a legacy that gave us a decades-spanning film music project, arguably the most beloved in film music history.
